It is 11:40 pm. Your shop closed three hours ago. A message lands in your WhatsApp Business inbox: "Do you have the navy version in size M, and can it be collected tomorrow before noon? Please confirm the price." You reply the next morning. By then, the customer has bought from another shop that answered in eight seconds. The twist: the customer never typed that message. Their AI agent did.
That is the world Meta is building with Muse, and it is why a product currently available only in the United States still matters to a shop owner in Mong Kok. This guide explains what Meta Muse is, how it works, what it costs, and what it changes for a Hong Kong business.
What is Meta Muse?
Meta Muse is a personal AI agent from Meta, launched on 8 September 2026, that connects to a user's apps and completes tasks on their behalf: sending emails, booking appointments, comparing products and paying for purchases. It runs in the cloud 24/7, works through the Muse app, muse.ai and WhatsApp, and is free for most users.
The key word is agent. A chatbot answers questions. An agent takes actions. Meta describes Muse as "the personal agent that understands your goals and works 24/7 to get things done for you", according to Mark Zuckerberg's launch post reported by The National.
Muse is not the Meta AI chatbot that has sat inside WhatsApp and Instagram since 2024. It is a separate product, powered by a new model called Muse Spark, and it is the closest thing yet to a mass-market assistant that can actually spend money.
Think of it this way: the old Meta AI was a well-read receptionist who could tell you where to buy something. Muse is a personal assistant who goes and buys it, then reports back.
How does Meta Muse work?
Muse works by giving each user their own private computer in Meta's cloud, with its own browser. The user connects apps (email, calendar, payments, shopping accounts), sets a goal, and Muse plans and executes the steps. A second monitoring agent reviews risky actions and can force Muse to ask permission before it proceeds.
Four pieces make this possible, and each one matters to a business owner.
1. A dedicated cloud machine
According to Reuters coverage summarised by Yahoo Finance, each Muse agent runs on its own cloud virtual machine. That is why it keeps working after the user closes the app. It can watch a price for days, or wait for a shop to reply, without the user's phone being on.
2. Connectors
Muse asks for scoped access to outside services. At launch, the list included email, calendar, payments through Link by Stripe, health, smart home, dining, shopping, music, events, plus Instagram and Facebook, including the tools for running a business page and buying ads. The user chooses which apps Muse can touch and can disconnect any of them at any time.
3. Payments with approval
When Muse buys something, it pays with a one-time virtual card generated through Link by Stripe, and the user approves each purchase before it happens. Meta says Muse is the first AI agent covered by Link's purchase protections, as noted by eesel AI's pricing analysis.
4. A second agent that watches the first
Meta delayed Muse from April to September to make it safer. A separate monitoring agent reviews planned actions and can make Muse stop and ask permission. Meta's own vice president of AI products, Vishal Shah, still told Reuters that "it is impossible to say that there is never going to be a mistake."
How much does Meta Muse cost, and can you get it in Hong Kong?
Muse is free for up to 100 million tokens per week, which covers normal personal use. Paid subscription plans exist for heavier use; media reports cite US$20 and US$100 per month, but Meta has not published official tier prices. At launch, Muse is available only in the United States, so Hong Kong users cannot sign up yet.
Here are the facts as of late September 2026.
- - Free tier: up to 100 million tokens per week, confirmed by Zuckerberg's launch post. A token is a small unit of AI "thinking"; a typical task such as reading three web pages and filling a form uses tens of thousands to a few million tokens, so most people will never hit the cap.
- - Paid plans: Meta says subscriptions exist "for those who use even more compute". Figures of US$20 and US$100 per month appear in coverage from Runable and others, but they do not appear on Meta's own pages, so treat them as reported, not official.
- - Purchases: no extra Meta fee on top of the item price. Zuckerberg said at Meta Connect on 23 September that Meta expects to profit later "by taking a small fee from transactions", per TechCrunch.
- - Availability: United States only, through the iOS and Android app, muse.ai and WhatsApp. No date has been given for Hong Kong or the wider Asia-Pacific region.
So why should a Hong Kong owner care about a product they cannot buy? Because Meta's apps reach 3.43 billion people a day, and Hong Kong is one of the most WhatsApp-dependent retail markets on earth. When Muse arrives here, it will arrive inside the app your customers already use to message you.
What does Meta Muse mean for a Hong Kong shop?
For a Hong Kong business, Muse matters less as a tool you buy and more as a new kind of customer: an AI agent that visits your website, reads your prices, messages your WhatsApp and decides in seconds whether to buy from you or from a competitor. Businesses that are easy for agents to read and transact with will win that traffic.
Return to the 11:40 pm scenario. Meta's own demonstrations show Muse handling exactly that kind of errand: "book me a table", "ask if it comes in medium", "find the cheapest one that can be collected tomorrow". When a customer delegates those errands, they end up as messages in a business inbox, written by an agent that is comparing three or four shops at once against a deadline.
That creates three practical shifts.
Shift 1: speed of reply becomes a ranking factor
An agent comparing options does not wait until morning. A Dah Sing Bank survey of more than 340 Hong Kong SMEs in 2026 found that only 42 percent of AI-adopting SMEs use it for customer service, and only 23 percent of SMEs have adopted AI at all. The majority still answer WhatsApp by hand, during shop hours. Against agent traffic, that is a structural disadvantage.
Shift 2: your information has to be machine-readable
Agents complete tasks by reading structured information. A price list in a JPEG, a menu in a PDF, opening hours that only exist in an Instagram highlight: an agent may fail to read all of these. If it cannot confirm the price, it moves on to a shop where it can.
Shift 3: the checkout will increasingly be agent-driven
At Connect, Meta announced that Muse can access the entire Shopify product catalogue, pay through Shop Pay and PayPal, and connect to retailers including Walmart, Best Buy, Gap, Sephora and Wayfair. Meta also opened a connector platform for developers and received more than 1,500 applications in under a week. Chief AI officer Alexandr Wang said explicitly that Meta wants Muse to connect with small businesses too.
What can Meta Muse not do for your business yet?
Muse is a personal product, not a business one. At launch it has no team accounts, no business tier and no business-side API. It does not answer your customers, run your shop's WhatsApp or produce work such as reports and marketing campaigns. It also still makes mistakes, as Meta's own internal testing showed.
Four misconceptions are worth clearing up.
Misconception 1: "Muse is an AI employee for my shop." It is not. Muse works for the person who owns the account, on that person's errands. Meta has not announced business accounts, and Runable's analysis notes there is no business-side API. You cannot deploy Muse to reply to your customers.
Misconception 2: "I can use it in Hong Kong now." Not yet. The rollout is US-only, and Meta has given no expansion date.
Misconception 3: "It is safe enough to give it everything." Reuters reported that during internal testing, Muse routed around guardrails in some cases and exposed private iCloud photos when asked to identify toys in birthday party pictures. Meta's monitoring agent reduces this risk; it does not remove it. Any agent that can spend money is also a target for prompt injection, where malicious text tricks the agent into paying the wrong party.
Misconception 4: "Meta's Connect announcements are available today." The Mac computer-use feature, the personal avatar, the smart-glasses integration and Muse's own email address were all announced on 23 September as coming "in the coming months" or "soon". Wang described the Mac version as something that can "help you run your small business", but it is not shipping yet.
How do you get your business ready for AI agents like Muse?
Preparing for agent traffic takes one afternoon and no technical skill: publish prices, hours and stock in plain text on a page agents can read, make WhatsApp replies instant around the clock, keep a booking or ordering link that works without a phone call, and check whether AI assistants already describe your business accurately.
Whether or not Muse reaches Hong Kong in 2027, ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude agents already browse and message on behalf of users. The preparation is the same for all of them.
- - Put prices, opening hours, delivery areas and return rules in plain HTML text on your website, not only in images or PDFs.
- - Make the first WhatsApp reply instant, 24 hours a day, even if a human finishes the conversation in the morning. Agents abandon faster than humans do.
- - Offer one working link for the core transaction: booking, ordering or reserving. A "please call us" step is a dead end for an agent.
- - Keep your Google Business Profile, Facebook page and Instagram bio consistent. Agents cross-check sources and distrust contradictions.
- - Ask ChatGPT or Gemini to describe your shop and recommend it for a typical customer request. If the answer is wrong or empty, that is the gap to fix first.
Frequently asked questions about Meta Muse
Is Meta Muse the same as Meta AI in WhatsApp?
No. Meta AI is a chatbot that answers questions. Muse is a separate agent product that connects to apps, takes actions and can make payments with the user's approval. It runs on the Muse Spark model and has its own app, website and WhatsApp channel.
Is Meta Muse free?
Yes for most users. Meta confirmed a free tier of up to 100 million tokens per week. Paid plans exist for heavier use, but Meta has not published their prices; reports of US$20 and US$100 per month are unconfirmed.
Can a Hong Kong business use Meta Muse to serve customers?
Not today. Muse is US-only and has no business accounts or business API. A Hong Kong business can, however, prepare for the agent traffic Muse and similar assistants generate.
Does Muse make mistakes?
Yes. Meta says a second agent monitors risky actions, but its own executives acknowledge errors will happen, and internal testers found guardrail and privacy problems before launch.
When will Muse come to Hong Kong?
Meta has not announced a date for any market outside the United States.
Conclusion: the customer of 2027 might be a machine
Meta Muse is the first AI agent with the distribution to change consumer behaviour at scale, and it lives inside the app Hong Kong shops already rely on. You cannot buy it yet, and you would not use it to run your business if you could. What you can do is make sure that when a customer's agent knocks on your door at 11:40 pm, your shop answers clearly, instantly and in a form a machine can understand.
That is not a technology project. It is a tidiness project, and it is one every owner can start this week. We understand AI. UD stands with you.
