Most Hong Kong retail shops are paying a full-time salary to have someone answer "do you have this in stock?" on WhatsApp, forty times a day, seven days a week. The owner knows it. The staff know it. And every AI vendor in town knows it, which is why the price lists are so confusing. This page puts the real September 2026 numbers side by side so you can decide what a shop like yours should actually pay.
The context matters. Hong Kong retail sales rose 4.5 percent to HK$31 billion in July 2026, the fifteenth month of growth in a row, according to the Census and Statistics Department. Online sales grew faster, up 9.5 percent to HK$2.8 billion, but still only 9.1 percent of the total. In other words, the typical Hong Kong shop is still a physical counter with a WhatsApp number. That is the buyer this page is written for.
How much does AI for a Hong Kong retail shop actually cost in 2026?
A small Hong Kong retail shop can add useful AI for between HK$0 and roughly HK$3,500 a month, depending on which of four jobs it wants covered: selling online, answering customers, producing content and photos, or running back-office admin. The platform fee is rarely the biggest cost; add-on modules, per-conversation AI charges and transaction fees are.
Every "AI for retail" product on the market does one or more of these four jobs. Pricing them job by job is the only way to compare honestly.
- - Selling online: an e-commerce platform with AI features built in. HK$0 to HK$2,249 a month.
- - Answering customers: a chatbot or AI employee on your website and WhatsApp. HK$190 to HK$3,500 a month.
- - Content and product photos: writing and image tools. HK$0 to HK$300 a month.
- - Back office: stock, orders and reports. Usually bundled into the platform tier you choose.
For comparison, one shop assistant at Hong Kong's statutory minimum wage of HK$43.1 an hour, effective 1 May 2026, costs about HK$8,960 a month for a 48-hour week before MPF, and a typical retail salary is far higher. Every number below should be read against that figure.
How much do Hong Kong e-commerce platforms with AI cost?
SHOPLINE's Hong Kong plans run from HK$499 to HK$2,249 a month on annual billing plus a 0.3 to 0.8 percent traffic maintenance fee, with AI content generation sold as an add-on module. Boutir starts free and from HK$99 a month, but WhatsApp API, AI marketing and POS sync require its HK$1,241 tier. EasyCart charges a flat HK$488 with no commission. Shopify Basic is US$29 a month billed annually with its Sidekick AI assistant included.
Here is what each platform's own pricing page says as of September 2026.
SHOPLINE Hong Kong
The SHOPLINE pricing page lists four annual plans: Basic at HK$499 a month (HK$5,988 a year, capped at 1,000 products), Pro at HK$1,234, Social Pro at HK$1,666 with Facebook and Instagram live selling, and All-in-one OMO at HK$2,249 with WhatsApp Business API and online-to-offline membership sync. A "traffic maintenance fee" of 0.8 percent of monthly sales applies on Basic and Pro, falling to 0.5 and 0.3 percent on the higher tiers, and is waived on orders paid through SHOPLINE Payments. A no-contract Lite plan is advertised at HK$199 a month as a limited offer.
The AI catch: "AI Content Generation" and "AI Database and Reply Suggestions" are marked as additional purchases on the Basic and Pro tiers. The auto-reply robot for your website, Facebook and Instagram messages arrives only at Social Pro. So the AI you saw in the advert is not in the HK$499 plan.
Boutir
Boutir offers a free-forever plan and paid plans from HK$99 a month, built for owners who run the shop from a phone. According to the April 2026 EasyCart platform comparison, WhatsApp Business API, AI marketing and POS inventory sync require the HK$1,241 a month tier, a large jump, and some settings exist only in the mobile app.
EasyCart
EasyCart charges a single flat HK$488 a month with 0 percent commission and includes AI-assisted product listing and Cantonese live support. Note that the comparison linked above is EasyCart's own, so treat its rankings as a vendor's view and its prices as a starting point to verify.
Shopify
Shopify Basic costs US$29 a month billed annually or US$39 monthly, roughly HK$226 to HK$304, and its Sidekick AI assistant is included on every plan. The trade-off for a local shop is that PayMe, FPS and other Hong Kong payment methods depend on third-party apps, Shopify Payments is unavailable for some Hong Kong industries, and card fees plus app subscriptions rise with volume. The free trial is 3 days, against SHOPLINE's 14.
How much does AI customer service cost for a shop?
Website chat tools such as Tidio start at US$24.17 a month for 100 human conversations, with the Lyro AI agent sold separately from US$32.50 a month for 50 AI conversations. Platform-native WhatsApp automation is bundled into higher e-commerce tiers. A managed AI employee that handles Cantonese WhatsApp enquiries end to end typically costs HK$600 to HK$3,500 a month for 1,000 to 5,000 messages.
Customer service is where most Hong Kong shops feel the pain, and where the pricing models differ most.
Per-conversation chat tools
Tidio's pricing page shows Starter at US$24.17 a month for 100 billable conversations, Growth from US$49.17 for 250, and Plus at US$300 a month plus usage. The Lyro AI agent is a separate add-on from US$32.50 a month for 50 AI conversations; the free plan includes a one-off pool of 50. Tidio advertises that Lyro solves up to 67 percent of customer problems. The limitation for Hong Kong: Tidio is built around website chat and English-first knowledge bases, and it publishes no Cantonese accuracy figures.
Platform-bundled WhatsApp automation
If you already pay for SHOPLINE Social Pro, its auto-reply robot covers your website, Facebook and Instagram messages; on the All-in-one OMO tier it extends to WhatsApp as well. For a shop that is upgrading anyway, that can be the cheapest route. The trade-off is that the bot only knows what is in your store back end, and the WhatsApp Business API itself is an additional module on Basic and Pro.
A managed AI employee
The third option is an AI employee that reads your product list, answers in natural Cantonese or English, hands off to a human when needed and reports what customers asked. UD's earlier breakdown of what AI customer service really costs in Hong Kong puts the all-in figure at HK$600 to HK$3,500 a month for a shop handling 1,000 to 5,000 messages. UD's own AI Staff Solution is priced per role after a free assessment rather than on a public rate card, so it is not listed with a number here; the AI Staff pricing guide explains what drives the quote.
What do AI content and product photo tools cost?
General AI writing assistants cost about US$20 a month, design tools with AI image generation about US$13 to US$15 a month, and AI product-photo tools from US$19 a month for 200 images. Against traditional Hong Kong product photography at HK$150 to HK$400 per basic shot, a single 50-item catalogue refresh pays for a year of software.
Content is the AI job Hong Kong SMEs adopt first: 56 percent of AI-using SMEs apply it to marketing or content creation, according to Dah Sing Bank's 2026 survey of more than 340 companies. The economics explain why.
- - ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro or Gemini's paid tier: about US$20 a month each. One is enough for product descriptions, Instagram captions and customer reply templates in Traditional Chinese and English.
- - Canva Pro: about US$13 to US$15 a month, including AI image generation and background removal.
- - AI product photos: tools such as Pebblely start at US$19 a month for 200 images, against HK$150 to HK$400 per basic white-background photo from a Hong Kong studio.
The honest limitation: AI product photos are convincing for flat goods, cosmetics and packaged food, and still unreliable for jewellery, glassware and anything a customer needs to see in true colour.

Where does the cheap option beat an AI employee?
If your shop receives fewer than about 300 customer messages a month, sells fewer than 50 products, or already pays for a SHOPLINE tier that bundles auto-reply, a free Boutir store plus a human answering WhatsApp will beat any managed AI employee on cost, including UD's. An AI employee only wins when message volume, after-hours enquiries or staff turnover are the real expense.
A comparison that ends with the vendor winning every row is an advertisement. Here is where the alternatives win.
Low volume: at 300 messages a month, a part-time assistant answers each one in the gaps between customers. Paying HK$600 or more for AI to do that is a waste.
Already on a bundled tier: if you are on SHOPLINE Social Pro because you live-stream, its auto-reply robot is already paid for. Use it before buying anything else.
Website-first, English-first shops: a cross-border seller whose customers chat on the website in English is well served by Tidio at under US$60 a month, and does not need Cantonese WhatsApp handling.
The AI employee's own limitations: it needs a clean product list and clear policies to work from, it will hand ambiguous cases back to you, and its price is quoted rather than published, which makes it harder to compare on a spreadsheet than a US$24.17 plan.
Which AI setup should a Hong Kong shop choose?
An Instagram seller under HK$50,000 a month should start with Boutir or EasyCart plus one US$20 writing assistant. A single physical shop with a busy WhatsApp should keep its platform and add either a bundled auto-reply or a managed AI employee, depending on volume. A multi-branch retailer should look at SHOPLINE OMO or Shopify plus an AI employee covering all channels.
Buyer type 1: the Instagram or live-selling seller, under HK$50,000 a month
Boutir free or HK$99, or EasyCart at HK$488, plus one AI writing subscription at about US$20. Total under HK$650 a month. Skip paid customer-service AI until enquiries exceed what you can answer between orders.
Buyer type 2: one physical shop, WhatsApp doing 1,000 or more messages a month
Keep whatever platform you use. If you are on SHOPLINE Social Pro or above, switch on the bundled auto-reply first. If not, a managed AI employee at HK$600 to HK$3,500 a month replaces the after-hours and repetitive share of one assistant's job, which at roughly HK$8,960 a month even at minimum wage is the number to beat.
Buyer type 3: two or more branches, online and offline stock
SHOPLINE All-in-one OMO at HK$2,249 or Shopify with apps gives synced inventory and membership. Layer an AI employee across WhatsApp, website and Instagram so every branch answers the same way. Expect HK$3,000 to HK$6,000 a month in total, still below one salary.
Frequently asked questions about retail AI costs in Hong Kong
Is there any free AI for a Hong Kong retail shop?
Yes. Boutir's free plan, Shopify's Sidekick on any paid plan, Tidio's one-off pool of 50 AI conversations, and the free tiers of ChatGPT, Gemini and Canva all cost nothing. Free tiers cover content and basic listings well; they do not cover round-the-clock WhatsApp answering.
Does SHOPLINE include AI in the HK$499 plan?
Not the headline features. AI content generation and AI reply suggestions are additional purchases on Basic and Pro, and the auto-reply robot starts at Social Pro (HK$1,666 a month).
How much does a WhatsApp AI assistant cost in Hong Kong?
For 1,000 to 5,000 messages a month, roughly HK$600 to HK$3,500 all in, covering platform, per-conversation charges and AI usage. Platform-bundled WhatsApp automation is included at SHOPLINE OMO (HK$2,249) or Boutir's HK$1,241 tier.
Is Shopify cheaper than SHOPLINE for a Hong Kong shop?
On the sticker, yes: US$29 versus HK$499 a month. In practice, Hong Kong payment methods on Shopify need paid apps and card fees scale with sales, so a local-only shop often ends up paying more. Shopify wins for cross-border sellers.
What does UD's AI Staff Solution cost?
UD quotes per AI role after a free assessment of your message volume and channels rather than publishing a flat rate. The market range for an equivalent managed AI employee is HK$600 to HK$3,500 a month.
Conclusion: buy the job, not the buzzword
The retail AI market in Hong Kong is not expensive. It is confusingly priced. Platforms advertise AI and sell it as a module; chat tools advertise a low monthly fee and bill per conversation; photo tools are cheap and only sometimes good enough. Decide which of the four jobs is costing you a salary today, price that job alone, and ignore the rest until it hurts.
Whatever you choose, the shop assistant who answers "do you have this in stock?" for the fortieth time today deserves a better use of their afternoon. UD stands with you, making AI human.
