Two Hong Kong shops handle the same 900 customer messages a month. One pays about HK$4,850. The other pays about HK$665. Neither of them chose badly. They chose vendors that count a different thing.
That is the whole problem with AI customer service pricing in 2026. The per-unit rates look comparable. The units are not. This page sets out what each major vendor charges, what each one is actually counting, what a realistic Hong Kong monthly bill looks like, and who should choose what.
How much does AI customer service cost in 2026?
Published rates sit between about US$0.10 and US$2.00 per unit of work, plus helpdesk seats. The spread is not really about quality. It is about whether you are billed only when the AI succeeds, or every time a customer opens their mouth.
The published rates, as of September 2026
--- Intercom Fin: US$0.99 per resolution. Standalone "Fin for platforms" from US$49 a month, which includes 50 resolutions. Intercom helpdesk seats from US$29 per seat per month, billed annually.
--- Zendesk AI agents: no per-resolution rate published by Zendesk. Third-party comparisons estimate roughly US$1.50 on a committed plan and around US$2.00 pay-as-you-go. The former US$50 per agent Advanced AI add-on was folded into Suite and Support plans in May 2026.
--- Freshdesk Freddy AI Agent: billed per session, commonly cited at about US$100 per 1,000 sessions with 500 sessions included each month. Freddy AI Copilot is US$29 per agent per month. Freshdesk plans start at US$15 per agent per month.
--- Tidio: from US$32.50 a month, with a free tier carrying a limited number of Lyro conversations.
--- Helpdesk-agnostic layers such as My AskAI sit on top of your existing tool at a flat rate near US$0.10 per ticket.
Treat every figure above as a list price. Zendesk's number in particular is an outside estimate, not a published rate, and you should insist on seeing it in your own quote.
What exactly are you being billed for?
Three billing units are in circulation, and the difference between them can move your bill by a factor of five. This is the single most important thing to establish before you sign anything.
Per resolution
You pay only when the AI is judged to have answered the question. Intercom records a resolution when the customer confirms they were helped, or when the conversation ends without them asking for more help. If the AI fails and a human takes over, you are not charged for the AI attempt.
Per session or per conversation
You pay for the interaction regardless of outcome. Freshdesk counts a session as any customer interaction inside a 24-hour window. If your AI resolves 60% of messages, a per-session model charges you for the other 40% as well.
Per seat
The old helpdesk licence, still underneath almost all of the above. Seats scale with your headcount, not with your traffic, which is the one line that AI does not shrink.
The trap is comparing a US$0.99 resolution against a US$0.10 session and concluding the second is ten times cheaper. At a 60% resolution rate, US$0.99 per resolution is effectively about US$0.59 per incoming message. At the same volume a per-session model at US$0.10 is about US$0.10 per message. Still cheaper, but not by ten times, and the two products are doing different amounts of work.
What would 900 messages a month actually cost?
Take a realistic Hong Kong retail or services business: three support staff, roughly 900 inbound customer messages a month across web chat and WhatsApp, and an AI that resolves 60% of them without a human. Converted at about HK$7.8 to the US dollar.
Worked monthly estimates
--- Intercom Fin: 540 resolutions at US$0.99 is US$535, plus three seats at US$29 is US$87. Total about US$622, or HK$4,850.
--- Zendesk AI agents: 540 resolutions at the estimated US$1.50 is US$810 in AI fees alone, or HK$6,320, before any seat cost.
--- Freshdesk Freddy: 900 sessions, 500 included, 400 billable at the cited US$0.10 is US$40, plus three agents at US$15 is US$45. Total about US$85, or HK$665.
--- Flat per-ticket layer on your existing helpdesk: 900 tickets at US$0.10 is US$90, or HK$700, plus whatever you already pay for the helpdesk.
These are estimates built from published and third-party rates, not quotes. Two things move them hard: your real resolution rate, and whether included allowances apply on the plan tier you are actually on. A resolution rate of 40% instead of 60% cuts the Intercom bill and does nothing at all to the Freshdesk one.
Where does each option genuinely win?
No vendor here is a bad product. Each one is priced for a different shape of business, and picking against your own shape is what produces the bill nobody budgeted for.
Intercom Fin wins when your resolution rate is high and your content is mostly English. Outcome-based billing is the fairest model that exists, and it aligns the vendor's revenue with the AI actually working. It is the most expensive per success and the cheapest per failure.
Zendesk wins when you are already an enterprise Zendesk shop with compliance, routing and reporting requirements that are genuinely hard to replicate. Its May 2026 restructure removed a separate AI add-on fee, which simplifies the seat line even though the resolution rate stays opaque.
Freshdesk wins on raw cost at volume, particularly if your resolution rate is modest. The included session allowance is the most generous free floor in this group.
A flat per-ticket layer wins when you already have a helpdesk you like and only want to bolt AI on to it without migrating anything.
Where does a deployed AI employee fit instead?
Every option above assumes a particular shape: you already run a Western helpdesk, your customers arrive through its chat widget, and your content is in English. A large share of Hong Kong SMEs match none of those.
If your customers reach you on WhatsApp, switch between Cantonese and English inside one sentence, and you have never installed a helpdesk at all, per-seat helpdesk pricing is solving a problem you do not have. That is the gap UD's AI Staff Solution is built for: an AI employee deployed into the channels you already use, set up and maintained rather than bought as a seat.
Being honest about where it does not fit
--- It is a deployed and managed service, not a self-serve signup. There is no credit-card checkout that has you live in ten minutes.
--- Pricing is quoted against your volume and channels. UD does not publish a per-resolution rate, so if your only requirement is comparing a public number against US$0.99, the vendors above are easier to evaluate.
--- If you already run Intercom or Zendesk happily and simply want their native AI switched on, switching to a deployed agent is more change than the problem warrants.
--- If your monthly message volume is genuinely small, under roughly 200, a free tier from Tidio or Freshdesk will serve you better than any deployment.
Which should you choose?
A verdict by buyer type, rather than a single winner, because a single winner would mean this comparison was an advertisement.
--- Already on Intercom, English content, good knowledge base: stay and turn on Fin. Outcome billing will treat you well.
--- Enterprise Zendesk with compliance requirements: stay, and get the per-resolution rate written into your contract before renewal.
--- High volume, price-sensitive, modest resolution rate: Freshdesk Freddy, or a flat per-ticket layer over what you already own.
--- WhatsApp-first, bilingual Cantonese and English, no helpdesk: a deployed AI employee, because the per-seat model was never designed for you.
--- Under 200 messages a month: a free tier. Revisit this page when you outgrow it.
Before any of that, do one thing: ask each vendor to define, in writing, what counts as a billable unit and what happens when the AI fails. The vendors that answer clearly are usually the ones whose bills do not surprise you.
If your customers phone rather than message, the cost structure is different again, and we covered it in our guide to full-duplex voice AI.
The cheapest AI customer service is not the lowest rate. It is the one whose billing unit matches how your customers actually behave. We understand AI. UD stands with you.
