DRC-20 101 – The New Token Standard to replace BRC-20?

While BRC20 is gaining attention for its Bitcoin network-based characteristics, DRC20, a token standard based on Dogecoin network might become the next hot pick.

In the ever-evolving cryptocurrency market, a variety of token standards have emerged, with BRC20 gaining attention for its Bitcoin network-based characteristics. However, DRC20, a token standard based on the Dogecoin network, is rapidly rising and is poised to become the next hot choice after BRC20.

What is a token standard?

In the cryptocurrency realm, a token standard is a protocol that integrates specifications and functionality into the token structure. They provide developers with a framework for creating and deploying tokens and ensure that tokens can operate smoothly on a blockchain network. Some popular token standards include ERC-20 (Ethereum) and BEP-20 (Binance Smart Chain).

BRC-20 Token Standard: A Bitcoin-based Experiment

BRC-20 was born in March 2023, developed by an anonymous programmer. It aims to enable the minting and trading of fungible tokens on the Bitcoin blockchain. The minting process of BRC-20 tokens uses JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) data for ordinals stamping to mint, transfer, and create tokens.

While BRC-20 has attracted widespread attention, it also has some drawbacks.

First, the BRC-20 token standard is based on the Bitcoin blockchain, which limits its scalability and performance.

Second, the BRC-20 token standard does not support smart contracts, which limits its functionality and scope of application.

Third, the BRC-20 token standard has relatively low security, which poses some risks.

DRC-20 Token Standard: An Innovation Based on Dogecoin

DRC-20 was launched in May 2023 and is a token standard specifically designed for the Dogecoin blockchain platform. DRC-20 tokens are interoperable with other popular token standards such as ERC-20. The minting process of DRC-20 tokens is similar to BRC-20, but it supports Dogecoin wallets and is compatible with decentralized applications (dApps) on the Dogecoin blockchain.

DRC-20 has the following advantages over BRC-20:

  • Higher scalability and performance: DRC-20 is built on top of the Dogecoin blockchain, which is not limited by the Bitcoin blockchain.
  • Support for smart contracts: DRC-20 supports smart contracts, which expands its functionality and scope of application.
  • Higher security: DRC-20 uses the more secure Keccak-256 cryptographic algorithm, while BRC-20 uses the SHA-256 cryptographic algorithm.
  •

The Future of the DRC-20 Token Standard

DRC-20 is a relatively new token standard, but it has already attracted the attention of developers. As the DRC-20 token standard continues to develop, it is poised to become one of the most popular token standards on the Dogecoin blockchain.

In fact, both DRC-20 and BRC-20 have their own advantages and disadvantages. Developers should choose the appropriate token standard according to their needs. The DRC-20 token standard has more obvious advantages, and it is expected to become the next important driving force for the development of the Dogecoin blockchain.

DRC20-based Projects

There are already several projects that have begun to adopt the DRC20 standard. Here are some examples:

  • DOGI: The first token developed using the DRC-20 token standard. It quickly gained widespread popularity in the cryptocurrency community due to its meme status and low price.
  • FIWB: Another DRC20 token, launched in December 2023. Unlike DOGI, FIWB was developed to provide utility. It can be used to pay for goods and services on the Doge blockchain, and it can also be used to earn rewards by participating in staking and liquidity pools. Its burning mechanism ensures that the supply of FIWB tokens decreases over time, increasing the token's scarcity and value.
  • DECX: DECX is another DRC20 token that is garnering a lot of attention. It is an automated market maker (AMM) that allows users to trade various DRC20 tokens without the need for an order book.
